Elihu Buritt
December 8, 8010 - March 6, 1879
Peace Movement
Born in Connecticut he was a reader and writer from a young age. He became a blacksmith but continued to gather knowledge and by 1840 he could speak several and read over 50 languages. He started to write books and soon had 37 about peace and human brotherhood. In the time he lived alcohol, religion, backgrounds and other various reasons caused violence. Many speeches were made by him all over the U.S. He was part of the movement to stay steer the world away from these things and move on to more peaceful methods of living. He started the Brussels congress of Friends of Peace which he wrote pamphlets for. Brussels is located in Belgium. He spent most of his time outside the U.S. but returned to New Britain (his place of birth) and dies in 1879 with much progress in the peace movement. When he went to England he originally thought to spend a mere three months but ended up being present there for 3 years.
The Peace congresses were attempts to stop wars and bring the world together but failed to make an impact. There was a last effort treaty before the civil war 1861 but was not successful. So his goal was not achieved ever. World peace doesn't exist and is not plausible. The U.S. achieved peace after the Civil War which reflects the work of Burrit so all of his knowledge so U.S. peace, part of his goal, was accomplished but the more important part he spent most of his life working on in Europe did not happen. He was so committed to peace that he urged Lincoln to let he South separate in peace but his request was not accepted. He was against slavery, which could have been implied, he didn't consider working out any deal with the South.
The heyday of the movement in his time would have been in 1861 at the Peace Conference of 1861 where 100 politicians met in oder to avoid the civil war. THe proposed bill them came up with was denied saying that inflicted on states rights. The movement it's self would have been very strong at the time with hundreds of key leaders such as Buritt. The movement may have failed to avoid the War but it made a large effort and that was what counted, that people were out there trying to earn peace.
